How to Prepare for the 2010 Build

To prepare everyone for the season, Edina Robotics FIRST Team 1816-The Green Machine, will host Minnesota Splash, a day devoted to all things FIRST.

It’s what you’ve been waiting for all year and it’s almost here, the 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff! But first, to prepare everyone for the season, Edina Robotics FIRST Team 1816-The Green Machine, will host Minnesota Splash, a day devoted to all things FIRST. Minnesota Splash this year will take place Saturday December 5th, and will run from 8 AM to 1 PM. The day begins with a 75-minute team gathering and presentation in the auditorium of Willey Hall, University of Minnesota, on the West Bank campus.

It was a busy morning, filled with presentations of interest to new – and veteran – FIRST Robotics teams.  The Green Machine presented two seminars. One focused on how FRC teams can promote themselves to corporate sponsors; a second seminar provided teams with an update on this year’s “beta” test of C++ software and new hardware, such as the Classmate PC.

Come see Team 1816-The Green Machine and other Minnesota FIRST teams this Saturday, October 10. The Southdale Robotics showcase, taking place from 12 pm to 8 pm in the Southdale Mall Atrium, is free and open to the public. Exhibits and demonstrations of the 2009 “Lunacy” robots, and robots from previous competitions, can be seen up close. Team 2169-King TeC, Prior Lake; Team 2220-Blue Twilight, Eagan, and Team 2264-Trojans, Wayzata, are also bringing their robots and spontaneous mini-competitions could happen at any time.

On September 20 The Green Machine was back in action, though this time we were washing cars for $5 each at the Firestone on 66th St. Customers not only were treated to careful, sudsy, hand-washed care, we also had a chance to talk to customers about FIRST Robotics and our robots. The money raised will be put directly to underwriting our competition entry fees, as well as tournament-related travel expenses to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Atlanta, GA.


A New Look At Robot Programming

This season, we are one of 43 FRC teams from around the country and Israel selected to test new control station components as well as software.

Once again, Team 1816 is pleased to announce it has been selected to be a FIRST Beta Testing team. This season, we are one of 43 FRC teams from around the country and Israel selected to test new control station components as well as software. This is a greatly expanded testing program. Last season, The Green Machine was one of 18 teams selected to test the new Compact RIO and other related hardware and software; this season, we are one of 10 teams selected to test new C++ library functions, as well as new driver station hardware. Other FIRST Robotics teams are testing LabVIEW and new this year, Java, software.

We are particularly looking for students with an interest in engineering, computer programming, math, business, marketing and media activities.

10th and 11th Graders: Want to know more about EHS’s FIRST  (FIRST = For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) Robotics team, the Green Machine? Come to Team 1816’s New Student/Parent Information Night, September 15, from 6-9 pm at Davanni’s (Vernon Ave.). If you think your friends are interested in joining the team, bring them too. The night is also a fundraiser, so bring your family. Some of the profits gathered by Davanni’s during that time go to support the Edina team.

Up to three teams with the highest point totals will be invited back to the State Fair on Labor Day.

The Green Machine will be back in action at the 2009 Minnesota State Fair on Tuesday, September 1, readying “Zeus” to defend the team’s State Fair Championship title of last summer. Facing off in the Education Building on Cosgrove Avenue during the 12 days of the fair, up to three FIRST Robotics teams each day will run an obstacle course created on top of the slippery flooring used during the 2009 FIRST Robotics Lunacy competitions. FRC teams including Prior Lake, Eagan, Champlin Park, and Roseville, will be present.

All year long Zeus, Zerkit and the whole robogang keep busy with plenty of special visits to adoring fans at places like the Mall of America, the Minnesota State Fair, Tech Day at The Works, and a host of Green Machine team-sponsored activities like “Minnesota Splash” and visits to elementary and middle schools. Such a popular show must be cruising the streets in style, right? Well, up until now our robots have been transported from the garage to a red carpet in none other than the trunk of a minivan… when we can squeeze them in, that is. But no more! From now on our robots will be making their highly anticipated appearances in none other than… (drum roll please!)… a super stylish, top of the line, bright green trailer!

Edina Robotics FIRST Team 1816 will help manage bike parking during the Bakken Museum's "Bike to the Bakken Day" on Thursday, July 23. If you ride your bike to the Bakken on July 23, admission to the museum is free. Team 1816 members will be parking and checking in bikes, as well as distributing the free admission voucher. The event itself is part of the Minneapolis Aquatennial. While at the Bakken, stop in and see live Shocking News About Your Heart science theater performances.

Minnesota FIRST Robotics teams from Prior Lake and Edina set up shop at Valleyfair the last Saturday of May, demonstrating the FIRST Robotics games of the last two seasons. Team 1816-The Green Machine took turns with Team 2169-King TeC, demonstrating both the 2009 “Lunacy” and 2008 “Overdrive” games. Both teams also took turns answering questions from park visitors about the capabilities of their robots and about FIRST.
