Mr. McGoff’s advice to students is, “Don’t take life too seriously. Sometimes something you think is the end of the world turns out to be the best thing that happened to you. I received my math degree in 1980 during a recession, so nobody was hiring and I was pretty down on myself. I went back to college and received my Mechanical Engineering degree, which turned out great. It stunk at the time-but great later on.”

Finance Subteam Mentor

Dave is the team’s Finance mentor. He enjoys working with other mentors who have specific knowledge and skills to share because it is an effective means for students to learn new things and get exposure to careers involving science and technology. He likes that FIRST teams operate like a small business: They need software engineers, mechanical engineers, fund raisers, accountants, marketers, web developers, photographers, writers, presenters, and community event organizers. There is a role for everyone, and everyone needs to work together. Dave’s favorite candy is whatever is within reach, and his favorite movie would have to be something with good acting, character development, and a message. They’re hard to find! His advice to students: “Keep encouraging and supporting each other. Sometimes the best moments are when problems are encountered. This is much of what FIRST is all about.”
