Fun. Responsibility. Commitment. Challenges. Real-life Engineering. How best to describe FIRST? As Team 1816 delves deeper into all aspects and opportunities of FIRST Robotics, it becomes ever-harder to put the essence of FIRST into an elevator speech. But FIRST members never say no to a challenge. Here are Emily Benson (captain 2010-11), Michael W. (captain 2011-12) and Alex O. (co-captain 2011-12) describing FIRST.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) sponsors robotics competitions aimed at inspiring and challenging students, grades kindergarten β 12 to learn and apply engineering and science skills. Founded in 1989, FIRST is a family of robotics competitions that begin with FIRST Lego League in elementary school and grows into the FIRST Robotics Competition in high school.
Inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, known for the invention of the Segway, believes that we become who we emulate. His vision: βTo create a world where science and technology are celebrated... where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.β Mr. Kamen believes if we celebrate the innovators in science and technology, more young people will be inspired to pursue careers in STEM: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. To help make this a reality, Mr. Kamen teamed up with Dr. Woodie Flowers, Pappalardo Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together, they have created a competition that truly is inspiring the next generation of science and technology superstars.
